The island
Guadeloupe (not to be confused with the Mexican island Guadalupe!) is a beautiful island located in the sunny Caribbean’s in the Atlantic Ocean. It has a total area of 1,705 sq km and a population of around 445,000 inhabitants. The climate of Guadeloupe is relatively subtropical with temperature usually rising between 24 and 32 degrees. Guadeloupe has a butterfly shape composed of two wings; Basse-Terre and Grande-terre, which makes it a very unique island with a large variety of amazing sceneries. Its airport is located in Pointe-a-Pitre.
Basse-Terre is the greener part of the island with an abundance of tropical forest, mountains, rivers and waterfalls in its centre as well as black sand beaches of rare beauty surrounding it. It is the perfect place for the fans of nature.
Grand terre is a lot flatter with a climate slightly drier than you would find in Basse-terre. Grande terre has some of the most beautiful white sand beaches of the Caribbean’s and holds the most popular night clubs of the island. The great part of Guadeloupe is that you can have access to both wings easily as there is only about an hour drive from one end to the other.
The official language of Guadeloupe is French but locals speak Creole (broken French).
Guadeloupe is a melting pot of the French, African, East Indian and West Indian cultural influences. This is evident through the architectural designs of the buildings, which includes the designs dating back from the French colonial period to the Indian imprint of Hindu temples. Art and handicrafts largely express Guadeloupe’s culture including the local music and cuisine.
Guadeloupe is the perfect place for anyone who wishes to have a variety of choices available to them. Whether you are after calm and peaceful environments or in a party mood, a natural surrounding or modern/touristic scenery, you will find it. In Guadeloupe, you have the best of both worlds.
