A man is not old until regrets take the place of dreams.
~John Barrymore

We have all been told that as human beings we stop growing up in our early twenties. Up until now most people feel youthful, life is great until the time comes when people reach the age of thirty. At that time, many think that they are getting older and unconsciously think that, along with their body, life altogether starts to deteriorate (hence the need to consider plastic surgery!).

With such a perception of life, it is no wonder that there is such a great number of desperate people trying to remain young forever. They do not understand yet that there is no such thing as ‘getting older’. Of course, our bodies do get older, but this is as far as it goes. We are in fact designed ‘to grow’ every single moment of our lives.
For many people staying physically young forever means staying alive. They have not learnt that ‘growing’ is a beautiful thing because they mistake it with ‘getting older’.

Life is about growth, growth is about change, growth is about development. Whoever refuses to change, refuses life, and lives in a dead world; the past. The physical side of getting older is necessary to understand growth. It is a blessing, which shows us that life is about accepting change. The older you grow the more you accept life whereas the older you get, the more you regret your youth thus unconsciously living in the past, you get old and miserable.

Now in my 30s I feel that the process of growth has never stopped, of course my body is ageing, but accepting it is a part of growing. I have come to understand that one should never stop growing; even on his deathbed, one should never feel that he has stopped growing. There are life lessons to be learnt every single moment spent alive. When you ‘grow older’ (as opposed to ‘getting older), you accept life, everyday is new, it is the discovery of a new you, when you have accepted life that way, you will accept death the same way. Death will not be the end but a new beginning, a change, a part of growth.

From the moment you stop growing, you are virtually dead; you have already given up on life.
Someone who stops growing lives with what he has gathered throughout his or her life. Someone who gets older is attached to old stuff, attached to the past. Rather than letting go of the past, they cling to it and refuse to accept the new, to accept the present, to accept growth. Therefore, they do not know wisdom, because they have stopped growing, they have stopped learning, they are the living dead!
Many have not realized yet that our body deteriorating is a blessing. It is a slow process, which allows us to accept the fact that we cannot attach ourselves to earthly things. That shows us that outside beauty is short lived. As you realize that, you come to grow spiritually, your body gets old but your spirit becomes fresh and rejuvenated. You are ready to let go of your body, you realize that you no longer need it, you are welcoming eternal youth.
