"A mind is like a parachute. It doesn't work if it is not open."

The most important thing for anyone wishing to improve themselves is to understand the importance of opening their mind. I see many people reading self-help books in abundance with the intention to improve but they do not seem to draw the desired outcome from them.
Have you ever tried to put your foot in a shoe way too small for it?
Well, this is what they are trying to do; they attempt to enter information in their mind that is excessively too vast for the size of their current consciousness. In order to grow, it is not rocket science; one has to make space for it! That said, certain thought patterns make it seem almost impossible to do so.

How to open your mind when you think that you are worthless or if you think that the whole world is against you?
It is true, limiting thought patterns such as low self-esteem and anxiety make it difficult, this is why it is vital to first put things in their right proportions. People who have to deal with those kind of issues tend to overdramatize situations. The solution is to work out a way to see the world from an angle closer to reality.

Questioning is the answer, one has to keep asking questions. However, not the type of questions that is directed to someone else, the kind that forces you to reflect on yourself.
The problem with most books is that they give you knowledge to understand things better but not necessarily the tools to make you understand yourself better.
Most human beings have limited beliefs and it becomes dangerous when people start living their lives according to those beliefs without ever asking themselves whether they could be wrong to do so. If you cannot see your limiting beliefs, you will not be able to tackle them. Most books will tell you about this but will not help you find your own limiting beliefs.

There are questions that I often ask myself, "what if I was wrong?".
'What if the perception that I have of the world and myself was different from reality?"
"Am I being objective with myself?"
"Am I being too hard on myself (or on others)?
"What if what I consider to be reality was in fact an illusion?"
"If I was an outsider, how would I see the current situation?"
"What if my values, my opinions and all the rest were wrong?"
"How can I become a better person?"
I always had the ability to ask myself the right questions to put things into perspective and it has helped me a lot throughout my life. I did not know that what I have been doing had a name; it is apparently called CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy). I came across an interesting book the other day from a life coach who lives in UK. He designed workbooks full of questions, which I found could be of some help for you. Instead of concentrating on explanations, the workbooks focuses on exercises and helpful questions to deal with stress, anxiety, negative thoughts and emotions ,self esteem or assertiveness difficulties. When you are trapped in the circle of your own negativity, having someone to tell you that you are worth more than that or that you should stay positive may help you in the short term. Nevertheless, unless you are convinced deep down that it is true; you will soon find yourself caught up in the trap again. I see many people trying to fool themselves that they are positive whereas truly they are in denial.

The only way to fight those limiting thought patterns is by asking yourself the right questions, by facing your limiting beliefs head on so that you can see the world through objective eyes.
